I mean, whatever thing you could imagine a smart person to display, but amplified by a lot, in general: high cognitive flexibility, great lexicon and even better verbal reasoning, induction, deduction, general knowledge, very good problem solving skills etc. What kind of performance would these people display? It's so easy, for example, to get to a digit span like that when you are chunking, although not 100% of the time of course yet it seems like the lower the chunk size, the lower the performance, so it's difficult to say who's who in terms of ability. I don't understand these last few clauses, sorry! Do you mean to say that digit span seems to have a weak translation into real life uses?Īlso, within this group of people, what were the outliers? Were there people who went higher or lower or did they all cluster at 10-11 fw/bw? Ahhhh, so many questions! I also hate this scale! It's so ambiguous in its representation when exposed to people who can endlessly try it out. That is a particular skill that appears to be extremely weak in its generalizability, so that does translate poorly in terms of general intelligence How would you test visual span? How did these people test it? What kind of performance would these people display? And how large would this group be? My subpar and deficient cognitive executive functioning, needless to say, tremendously affects negatively my overall general reasoning abilities too, so I'm prone to mental buffering and constant re-tracking of thoughts and ideas in order to maintain a feeble sense of them, as if I didn't do that, I would be literally unable to express myself in a semi-coherent way. In terms of verbal processing, again, my reasoning mode is quite disorganized however I don't report any kind of pulse stemming from words (whose I struggle to retrieve, like a lot my short to medium term memory and recollection are a hot mess), they just seem to pop out in my mind, after a lot of pain endured obviously. I actually don't know if I were to consider myself a visual or verbal thinker, because my affinity in reasoning in pictures isn't that high, It takes me a lot effort to render mental images, let alone to manipulate them. My phonological loop seems to have faded away due to depression, long time ago. Thank you and, for the last time, sorry for so many questions (some of them perhaps a bit too inquisitive)! Could you fit into the latter category, otherwise is that result with 4-5 numbers purely from vocal memory or visual from being read the numbers out loud? Also, sorry if this is intrusive and you don't need to answer this, but could there be any mental condition that you have that erases your phonological loop? And, once again apologising about intrusiveness, how does this translate into your WMI and PRI in a test like the CAIT? Three, that's really interesting that you have no phonological loop, I remember a really long time ago reading somewhere that there were people that thought mostly/entirely in pictures while others in words. I tried changing that by editing in the first line but that still didn't work. Two, I just realized how I absolutely fucked up, I'm now certain that many people will vote on their normal digit spans as would be normal when you are scrolling reddit and see a title such as "forward digit span". Okay three things: For one, I just realized you are the moderator of this community which must be a horrific job, so kudos to you. Thank you for your contribution and please, please be truthful! Further, this will only run for a day.Įdit: (formatting too), if you get a digit span >=9 following this procedure, it'd be amazing if you could state your performance on other tests, thank you! Of course, if you want to, display your scores regardless of your digit span, anyone is welcome to help! This being a subreddit dedicated to cognitive testing, I think it works well as a host for my experiment. Sorry if these are strict rules but I'm just looking into how the working memory of the higher range of society is in an objective matter. And please follow this procedure completely aurally, do not look at the numbers as they are shown as this makes it easier to not visualize them. There seems to be a great amount of people here who have an elevated digit span, so I created an account to make this poll and see how far it stretches as I thought the maximum forward digit span to be 9-10.Īlso, grouping (as in separating digits into groups in your head), repeating the numbers during the calling out or using any mnemonics does not count! In other words, I desire that you listen to these numbers while looking at a wall or something without thinking anything in your visual or verbal memory and then recite as many numbers as you can and that you cancel out any attempts that include more than 3 repeated digit or a very obvious pattern like 123, 314, 246, etc. Digit span forward without any memory techniques:
